The primary payload was the United States Microgravity Laboratory-1, a manned Spacelab module in which extensive experiments in microgravity research were conducted. This record 13 day mission also provided new data on the effects of long-term manned tours in space. Secondary payloads included investigations in polymer processing and Shuttle radio experiments.!
